Notes
Grammar, briefly.
Six patterns that unlock most everyday Spanish. Read once, recognise them in sentences, and you’re most of the way there.
- Both translate to 'to be' in English — but Spanish splits them. • SER → permanent identity: name, origin, profession, traits. • ESTAR → temporary state + location: feelings, mood, where things are. Compare: 'Es aburrido' = he IS boring (trait). 'Está aburrido' = he IS bored (right now).
Soy médico.
I'm a doctor. (identity → ser)
Estoy cansado.
I'm tired. (state → estar)
Madrid está en España.
Madrid is in Spain. (location → estar)
El cielo es azul.
The sky is blue. (trait → ser)
